FACL

Foundation for the Advancement of Canadian Letters

FACL was established in 1976 by PMC to promote Canadian literature and literacy. Since its inception, the Foundation has distributed more than $250,000 in awards and grants to Canadian writers, literacy organizations, and other cultural industry groups to support the promotion of reading, literacy, and literature in Canada.

Through the FACL, PMC has sponsored awards for outstanding achievement in magazine writing and book authorship, as well as leadership in cultural policy.

Award recipients, among others, have included Margaret Atwood and Pierre Berton. The Foundation’s most recent initiative has been the creation of the PMC Indigenous Literature Award which recognizes outstanding Indigenous authors and illustrators on an annual basis.

Literature Awards

PMC Indigenous Literature Award

Since 2013, Periodical Marketers of Canada has sponsored the PMC Indigenous Literature Award as a program of FACL. The award, which includes a cash prize, has been presented annually in two categories to Indigenous authors and illustrators for outstanding book entries, as chosen by an independent panel of Indigenous Librarians selected by First Nations Communities Read. Conducted in partnership with the Southern Ontario Library Service, the award program has recognized a select group of prominent and aspiring Indigenous authors and illustrators from across Canada.

The PMC Indigenous Literature Award winners announced

Two books by Indigenous authors are being honoured with the Periodical Marketers of Canada PMC Indigenous Literature Award. The award was inspired by the annual First Nations Communities READ program, which celebrates and promotes the importance of Indigenous literature across Canada.

In the children’s category, Phoenix Gets Greater (Second Story Press) by Marty Wilson-Trudeau, an Anishinaabe Kwe writer originally from M’Chigeeng, Ontario, and her son, Phoenix Wilson, with illustrations by Megan Kyak-Monteith, is a story of a supportive and loving family.

In the young adult/adult category, My Indian Summer (Tidewater Press) by Joseph Kakwinokanasum, a member of the James Smith Cree Nation, was named the winning title. Kakwinokanasum’s book is about identity, reconciliation, and survival.

The selected titles, chosen by a jury of librarians from First Nation Public libraries across Ontario, will be recognized online during First Nation Public Library Week on October 5.

The authors each receive a $5,000 cash prize.
